Of the several factors to consider amid driveway design, the first and most obvious consideration is the number of vehicles that will be using the driveway. If you have a two-car garage, or will be parking two vehicles side by side, the concrete surface should be at least twenty feet wide where the cars or trucks are parked. As the driveway then extends toward the street, it can narrow to ten feet, but should later flare-out wider at the road to accommodate vehicle turns.
A single car garage or a single vehicle owner can get by with a ten-foot wide driveway.
However, this width does not allow room to turn-around. If you must back into a busy street, a turn-around is well worth considering for safety purposes. A slightly higher cost is often justified for the peace of mind, safety, and practical convenience it affords. We encourage our clients to evaluate and incorporate nearby traffic into their driveway design decisions.
